8 Basic Steps to Replace Your Light Fixture

 If your up for the challenge, we’ve got a few steps to help you easily change a lighting fixture in your home or office. It is not recommended for persons without basic electrical knowledge to replace their own light fixtures, so if the instructions are not clear in any way, do not attempt without consulting and electrician first.

Step 1
Find the breaker box and the fuse associated with the light fixture your going to replace. Double check by taking a few trips back and forth to the breaker box and room and testing the switch. Use a voltage tester, hold it to the fixture and find out if there is any electrical current present. If your voltage tester picks up a current you may have to switch off all power to the house, or contact an electrician.
Step 2
Illuminate the work area with an alternate light source – a flashlight with stand works great.
Step 3
Remove the nut that holds the plastic light diffuser to the fixture. Depending on what type of fixture you have, removing the diffuser is going to be different. Browse our product page to see what type of fixture you have and the associated spec sheet on the product page.
Step 4
Remove the screws that hold the fixture to the electrical box.
Step 5
Remove the electrical connecters and electrical tape adhered to the wires, before removing the fixture.
Step 6
Carefully read the manufacturers instructions on how to install your new fixture as the steps may be a little different from the original fixture.
Step 7
Screw in the mounting piece for the new fixture and begin reconnecting the wires. Connect the house black wire to the fixture’s black wire. Connect the house white wire to the fixture’s white wire. Connect the house ground wire to the fixture’s ground wire. To make the connections, twist the wires together in a clockwise direction and secure the connector piece to the end. Wrap each connection with appropriately colored electrical tape.
Step 8
Carefully stuff all reconnected wires back into the outlet box and finish the installation following the manufacturers instructions. Turn on the power again at the breaker and test.
Remember this is basic electrical work, but still very dangerous to the lay person. If you don’t feel confident in the instructions, or any of it is confusing to you, contact an electrician.
